This week's Official UK Albums Chart
Number 17 and rising on the Hot 100, and now Number One in her home country - this the current fate of Jessie J's latest single Domino as the inspired pop record this weeks make a seven place climb to give the UK yet another Number One single.
Like every Number One of 2012 so far, Domino has had a rather measured climb to the top, first charting a full six weeks ago when it first became available as one of the new tracks on the "Platinum Edition" of Jessie J's debut album Who You Are. Technically the track remains just an album cut with its official release as a single in Britain not due until the end of February - not that such schedules really have any meaning any more. With this climb it becomes the BRIT-nominated star's second chart-topping single, just under a year after Price Tag became her first. An amazing pop record, don't let the mutterings that it sounds more like Katy Perry than anything else blind you to its appeal.
A nomination for a BRIT award seems to be a common badge for many of this week's chart movers. A Best International Male nominee, David Guetta soars to Number 8 this week with his latest single Titanium. Another track lifted from his Nothing But The Beat album, the track was one of a several promotional singles released last summer and the track's first chart run saw it peak at Number 16 in August last year. Now promoted to full single status, Titanium returns to the chart and instantly soars past its original chart placing to return Guetta to the Top 10 as a follow-up to Number 6 hit Without You. The single also gives guest singer Sia her biggest ever chart hit, the first time she has been seen in the Top 10 since her debut solo single Taken For Granted peaked at Number 10 in June 2000.
Down in the Top 20 there is a mini-cluster of big name female stars. Of particular note is Rihanna who in her usual style is managing to juggle several chart hits all at once. She features on We Found Love at Number 11, Take Care at Number 18 and You Da One which bounces back to Number 19 after dipping to 24 last week.
Pixie Lott has a third Top 20 hit from her current album Young Foolish Happy as Kiss The Stars takes a bow at Number 14. It follows on from What Do You Take Me For which peaked at Number 10 in November last year.
A flurry of press attention for Lana Del Ray gives Video Games a boost as it rises back up the chart to Number 16, but a more surprising re-appearance is that of Birdy's Skinny Love which arrives back on the singles chart at Number 25. This spontaneous appearance follows its use in a routine by a contestant on the TV series "Dancing On Ice", returning the moving cover by the young teenager to the Top 40 for the first time since it peaked at Number 17 in May 2011.As we hold our breath waiting for the first big new album release of 2012, the parade of last years biggest sellers continues near the top of the album chart. This week's Number One album is Bruno Mars' Do Wops And Hooligans which climbs back to the top after a fortnight spent at Number 2. It is one year to the week since the album was last at the top of the charts, debuting at the summit in its first week on release. Since then it has barely been out of the Top 10, never dipping lower than Number 14.
Sympathies must go to the Maccabees who at one stage looked to be contending for a week at the top with their third album Given To the Wild but must instead be content with a place at Number 4. Even this is enough to make it their highest charting album to date, beating the Number 13 peak of 2009 release Wall Of Arms. A cut price promotion on iTunes has worked to the benefit of some older rock albums this week, with Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds leaping 15-8, Kasabian's Velociraptor jumping 17-9 and Foster The People's Torches moving 27-13. One suspects they need the boost, figures released today show that pop albums had 33% of the British market in 2011, the highest since 1999 with rock falling to a share of 29.4%, its lowest since 2003.
